But one fresh water fish, in particular seems to have become a "sacred cow" to many fishing enthusiasts. The largemouth bass (and sometimes the Smallmouth Bass) seems to have been able to acquire their freedom more than any other fresh water fish. The largemouth bass is a great tasting fish when eaten, but I've noticed now, a strange pang of guilt associated with my even considering it. I watched my son release an eight-pounder without even thinking about it; but not before he had his picture taken with it. There is a photo of that fish now, as my fishing avatar. So the question is: Do you give them their freedom or do you eat'em? And why do you do what you do where this fish is concerned?
Now, the extremely large Bass do have a distinct problem though. They could end up on somebody's wall. So, there are drawbacks to getting too big also. Where do you stand?
| | Show us a picture of your largemouth bass | | I hope I did this right. Hopefully, you can see the largemouth my son caught. I will probably never see the day I catch one that big since the one I wrote about in a previous story. | |
| | | Have you ever caught a fish? | | What type? How large? Where?
I caught a largemouth bass, up in Vilas County, Wisconsin. I did not weigh him, and if I had to guess, he was about 10 inches long.

| | I just caught dinner! Anyone enjoy fishing like I do? | | We live on a lake that is stocked with striped bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill. I was out looking at my garden and decided it was just too nice a day to go back in so I decided to go fishing.I caught a bunch of bluegill, but threw them back. They taste great, but they're more trouble than they're worth, in my opinion. Then, I finally caught dinner, after 2 hours of fishing! It's a really nice, very large striped bass. I think I'll cut up some potatoes and have "fish and chips" tonight. Do you have a passion for fishing like I do? How do you prefer to cook your fish? I prefer broiling them, but usually bake them because it takes less energy. I don't fry fish anymore because fried foods are not healthy. How do you make sure you get all the bones out? I've never been able to do that. | |
| | Pond Stocking | | About a month ago my brother-in-law completed work a fish pond he was refurbishing. Of course this meant that he had to empty the pond of the existing fish and place them in a small holding pond until work on the new pond was finished. As soon as the new pond had enough water in it to support new fish, my son and I volunteered to rescue the fish from the holding pond and put them into their new surroundings. There were literally hundreds of small bream, bluegill, perch, etc. But the main subject of our work was about 20 very large catfish which we managed to remove from what smelled like a toilet and was just as filthy. That night my son and I spent the night on the edge of the new pond. About 3 in the morning we were awakened by the dogs barking feverishly. The next morning, we noticed some very extremely large bear tracks all around the area. But that was just a sidelight to my actual subject. I decided to stock the pond with some largemouth bass. But all that was available were small (about 3 inches long). My question to anyone who might have knowledge in the subject is: With all the perch and other fish in the pond, including the catfish, do you think the small bass will have... | |
| | Take The Bait | | It was a cold winter day, when an old man walked out onto a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and began waiting for a fish to bite.
He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when a young boy walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not too far from the old man and dropped in his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a Largemouth Bass hit his hook and the boy pulled in the fish.
The old man couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, the boy dropped in his line and again within just a few minutes pulled in another one.
This went on and on until finally the old man couldn't take it any more since he hadn't caught a thing all this time.
He went to the boy and said, "Son, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble. You have been here only a few minutes and have caught about half a dozen fish! How do you do it?"
The boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rrarm."
"What was that?" the old man asked.
Again the boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm."
"Look," said the old man, "I can't understand a word you are saying."
So, the boy... | |
| | What do you think about these carp? | | Just what we need some people that think that it is alright to release trash fish that will destroy the waters for other fishes. If you're an avid sport fisherman, you probably don't think much about carp. That doesn't mean that old buglemouth isn't in the news.Bass Times, the 'Official Publication of the World's Best Bass Anglers', features an article it's May issue about the debilitating impact of carp in a fishery. Writer Mike Pehanich explains how a model backwater restoration and one of the hottest bass fisheries in the Midwest is now being crippled by a carp population explosion. Near record growth rates for largemouth bass and other gamefish in Hennepin and Hopper Lakes were attributed to an ecosytem anchored by a variety of native plants abundant in the lakes. According to Wayne Herndon, district biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources "Most of that vegetation has disappeared."Millions of dollars are spent each year to try and control the damage done by common carp. Entire lakes are sometimes poisoned as a last resort. Meanwhile...California and Texas Carp Sanctuaries?
