Q. Money, Banks, Etc...? A. The local currency is lemperas. Several banks are on the island, three within the town of Coxen's Hole. They will NOT cash a personal check, but getting cash advances on credit cards and cashing traveler's checks with your passport is no problem. There is an exchange at the airport in San Pedro Sula or you can change money in town at any bank. We recommend using credit cards for purchases, as plastic will give you the best exchange rate and will guarantee you the correct exchange rate. Q. Doctor, Dentist, Hospital? A. There is a small 20 bed hospital on the island. It is possible to fill an emergency prescription but we recommend that you bring your own perscription drugs. There are English speaking doctors and dental care on the island for emergencies. Q. Laundry? A. No need to bring an abundance of clothing. Gibson Point has its own machines as well as service provided by our local caretaker. Q. Shopping? A. There are a variety of stores downtown. Most accept credit cards, Lemperas and US currency. The shops are owned and operated mostly by locals and Europeans and offer numerous arts, crafts, and clothing. Q. The Language? A. English is spoken by the majority of the local citizens, although Spanish is the ofiicial language of Honduras. Most citizens are bilingual. Q. Restaurants and Food? A. Dining is informal but there are excellent restaurants on the island offering local cuisine and European-style dishes. Seafood is fresh and an outstanding choice. A shirt with collar, khakis and sandals are considered dressing up for dinner. Prices are reasonable at the local establishments and somewhat higher at the larger resorts. Q. What about Water? A. All the water at Gibson Point is safe to drink. We use both bottled water and water that is purified by filters. |
